March 8, Fashionables Part 2

Our excitement continues!

In this workshop we will focus on refashioning clothing that the kids already own, or belong to someone in their family, or found in thrift shops. We will start out with a short talk about fast fashion and how we can turn unworn or unwanted garments into something that has meaning for us. Neysa Young (the founding faculty of the Fashion Design department at CCA. She has taught fashion classes at other Bay Area colleges before being invited to be a part of CCA in 1996 when she was instrumental in establishing the curriculum of the core foundations of fashion studio classes – draping and patternmaking) will share examples with us.

Kanjana Amato, currently studying fashion design at Apparel Arts school for women's wear, will be assisting. She is currently developing her passion for luxurious fabrics and textiles for her children's clothing line. She has lived in London and New York, and believes that those cities have inspired her through fashion and art.

You can bring two to three garments that you're interested in turning into something new. The garments could be ones that belonged to someone else in your family. You can take the old and turn those into a new creation for yourselves to model in the auction.

We will also encourage hand sewing for those who want. Neysa will bring hand sewing needles, thread, trims, iron, etc. We will provide scissors that can cut fabric, and bring in some sewing machines too.
